The Caddo Indians: Tribes at the Convergence of Empires, 1542-1854 (Centennial Series of the Association of Former Students, Texas A&m universiTy, N)
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (June, 1995)
Average review score:

History, Baseball & BeerIf there is just one book you buy this year on the Caddo Indians, let it be this one. This is a book for scholars. But it is also a book for the armchair history buff. Smith writes in a palatable style. In the end, it is the natural narrative that carries the story. This part of American history is missed in most public education. Sit back with a cold one and this book. I did.

Called Out
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (June, 1994)
Average review score:

An haunting and eery experienceI have read this novel many years ago, and still the story continues to haunt me. It comes in vivid images : A quiet little town in Texas. A plane crash. Survivors pouring out of the wreck, disoriented, shocked, changed for the rest of their lives. This town, it will never be the same again. The people, they will come together. Milan Kundera once said that the success of a so-called 'Best-Sellers' is that it urges you to find a key, a solution. It is exciting, but once you've found it, the magic is over. You can throw away the book, the mystery is unveiled, the excitement is gone. Read this book, be different. It belongs to another category.

Cedar Fever
Published in Hardcover by Corona Pub (April, 1992)
Average review score:

Coming of Age storyFor young Katie Koenig, growing up German-American in the Texas Hill Country during World War I means fighting battles of her own. While suspicious outsiders challenge the patroitism of her tradition-bound German neighbors, Katie's own family and friends question her loyalty to Franz, her fiance, sent to fight as an American doughboy in Germany. The author skillfully weaves details of life in this community-the odors of Mama's baking, the feel of the earth in Katie's beloved flower garden, the excitment of dressing for a dance-into a moving story of a girl's coming of age in difficult times.

Celebration in Purple Sage
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (October, 1996)
Average review score:

Fantastic Read!Barbara Burnett Smith has again produced a work of art in Celebration in Purple Sage.
The characters are real, the settings believable, and anyone who has ever lived in small-town Texas, (or small-
town anywhere!) can identify with Jolie Wyatt. Don't start this book if you don't have time
to finish it, because you won't want to put it down

an enlightening book that can be enjoyed over and overProbably the most well researched book about Charles M. Russell. Even if one is not normally drawn to sculpture, this book could possibly be the one to change your mind. The subjects are varied, inspiring, and beautiful.
